Over the years I have owned both the sherline mill and the grizzly mini mill. The sherline was nice but it seems like it took forever to move the head down the column. It also took special sizes of everything from tee nuts to the taper in the spindle. Of course sherline was happy to sell you what you needed at very high prices.

Clausings and rockwell mills for the basement shop are great, easy to move and very desirable for the home shop machinest. Of course the mini mill doesn't have that ton of cast iron the knee mill has, or the costs. My mill is from Harbor Freight. It has been converted to CNC. I'm finding it hard to justify the cost of the CAD/CAM software. I mostly run it in Semi-auto mode. Grizzly tends to have higher quality machines than HF, and more variety.

The larger table and travel will increase you work envelope and make larger components for your projects. Power feed is nice since it is steady and that really helps surface finish in the long run. I have a G8689 Mini Mill from Grizzly, and it has been a great little mill for the price. I do agree with Adam, it does has it limitations as it doesn't have the weight needed to make heavy cuts (vibration) and your limited to the tooling that you can use. The DRO for depth would have been really nice if the mini mill had it.

I have the Grizzly G0516 Combo Lathe/Mill Same milling head and column as the G8689 Mini Mill. MT3 spindle nose versus R8 is a good comment. I have used both styles over many years. Each machinist has their own preference. R8 can deliver a lot of torque to a tool bit whereas Morse Taper can slip.
